Exploring Havana by foot allows travellers to experience the local culture firsthand using a city map. This is the best way for a traveller to truly understand the city. The city's old quarter, aptly named Old Havana, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and houses a number of neo-classical and baroque structures, such as the Castillo del Morro, Catedral de San Cristobal and Plaza de Armas. El Macelon, one of the district's main avenues, offers stunning views of the bay. Another well-known promenade is Paseo del Prado, a popular hangout for residents (or Habaneros). Vibrant with music and dancing from the various sidewalk cafes, the street also hosts an art market and underground realtors market during weekends.

The city is known for its production of rum and cigars and no Havana holiday will be complete without a visit to a distillery and cigar manufacturer. The Havana Club Rum Factory and Real Fabrica de Tabacos Partagás offer guided tours to the public from where purchases can be made. Hotel Ambos Mundos : While few would argue that the Hotel Ambos Mundos is the best hotel in Havana, it does have one very strong endorsement - one that the management has been promoting for decades: between 1932 and 1939, Ernest Hemingway stayed at the hotel, and room 551 is where he wrote the first few chapters of "For Whom the Bell Tolls". It was clearly his favourite room, and is now preserved as a shrine to the legendary author, with his affects - including the typewriter he worked on - exactly as he left them when he moved into his own house 9 miles outside of Havana. Local drinking establishments Hemingway was said to favour include La Bodeguita and La Floridita, so if you work up a thirst on your Cuba holiday, you can enjoy a mojito to Hemingway's specifications.

Being a harbor filled with historical, cultural, and architectural highlights, it became a very popular tourist destination and one of the most-recommended sites in Cuba. In 1982, it has added honor to the Cuban flag for being enlisted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Until now, even with tourism promoting it more to other people of the world, it still does not lose its innate charisma as it is a well-preserved area.

Linger and observe as the past unfolds before your eyes through the popular attractions in Old Havana, such as the outstanding cathedral of American Baroque, the Catedral de San Cristobal, the Castillo del Morro or guarding fortress of the entrance of Havana Bay, the Neobaroque Galician Center which served as the social center in the 19th to early 20th century, and the Plaza de Armas where military ceremonies took place.
