Egypt Tourist Attractions

By Abel Smith at 2010-12-20 00:37:51
The Great Pyramid of Giza is a pride attraction of Egypt that welcomes large number of tourists from all over the world. It is the largest structure of the world's original Seven Wonders and is principally still in tact. This pyramid is actually an architectural feat, which can never be duplicated with the modern technology as well as the advanced knowledge. In fact, many people in the world tried to make another look a like, but was failed to make one. The Japanese were also tried to build a smaller pyramid to scale. However, no one succeeded in building another attraction or wonder of the world.

It took about eighty years to build the pyramids. According to archeologists, about 20,000-30,000 people were involved in completing the task. The workers had different roles. Some dug up the rock, some moved it, and some shaped it into blocks. People also worked on different teams, each with its own name. On a wall in Khufu's Great Pyramid, for example, a group of workers wrote "Friends of Khufu." Teams often competed to do a job faster.

The Great Pyramid of Giza has been a mystery and also a puzzle to the mankind for ages. Being an ancient wonder, this structure amazes each and every human being in the world. The first question arises is how The Great Pyramid of Giza is been built. During the 5th century BC, the Greek historian Herodotus was spoke about this captivating structure in his writings. He also put forth his theory of how exactly the wonder was constructed. After that, many books have been written until now or in last 120-years, that tells the story of the pyramid. It is not like there is only one pyramid in the world.

The pyramids at Giza can be clearly seen from most parts of the city on a clear day. The Great Pyramids of Giza is such an imposing and monumental structure. It is absolutely mind-boggling to imagine that the ancient man with limited technology and workmanship could put up such a huge structure. Of course, how the pyramids were built is a question of great global debate and may never be conclusively answered. Other theories even point to outer space aliens as the sole builders of pyramids in Egypt.

The internal layout indicates there were at least two changes during construction. Initially it was determined that the burial chamber would be deep beneath the surface of the plateau. This was changed to incorporate a small chamber, now unfinished and known in error as the Queen's Chamber and 50ft above the plateau. The final construction incorporated the Grand Gallery, 28ft high and topped by a corbeled roof, leading upwards to a horizontal passage that enters the King's Chamber at the heart of the pyramid. A large granite sarcophagus, cut from a single block of Aswan granite was placed in the chamber. This must have been placed before the chamber was roofed because it is about an inch too wide for the Corridor.

According to an early survey conducted by Piazzi Smyth in 1865, the Great Pyramid was found to stand upon the latitude parallel of 29 Degrees, 58 Minutes, and 51 Seconds of arc north. Though a significant deviation from an exacting 30 degrees, Smyth noted that if one were to observe the pole of the sky from the foot of the Great Pyramid, at an altitude of 30 degrees; then with the refraction of the atmosphere taken into account, it would necessitate that the structure itself was built upon the parallel of 29 Degrees, 58 Minutes, and 22 Seconds of arc north.
