The famous Wat Arun in Bangkok is known as The Temple of Dawn. It is also known locally by the Thais as Wat Chaeng and is situated on the West side of the Chao Phraya River. This Buddhist temple is a well known landmark and most recognize it by its massive elongated central prang. The tourism Authority of Thailand is proud to announce that the prang is 104 metres high; however others have said it is only around 70 metres high.
Walking up the stairs of the prang to catch a glimpse of the Chao Phraya river is possible, however be careful as the stairs are pretty steep. Walking around the Wat grounds is peaceful; one could view the murals, mystical guardians and Buddha image. Although the area is peaceful, the peace might be disrupted by the locals asking for donations of about 100 baht.
To get the best views and photographs of Wat Arun, it is advisable to wait till evening so as to capture the sun setting behind the attraction. However, due to the closing time (stated below), one could go into some restaurants on the other side of the river to watch the sun set and take some photos.
The free online Skyscanner can give you information and book you on a cheap flight from London to Bangkok. The peak season is November to March, but if you go in the off season (May, June, and September are the least crowded), you can get better prices on flights and accommodations.
Traveling around the city and area can be accomplished by using an underground system, the sky train along a monorail, fast and air conditioned buses, tuk, and the popular water taxis. Thailand's trains are exceptional since they are on time, frequent, and comfortable.
The GRAND PALACE with its spectacular architecture was the home of kings since being built in 1782 and is still used by the current king, who holds ceremonies on the royal grounds. This Palace has the Emerald Buddha, the holiest and most revered of Thailand's images, which was carved from one piece of jade in the 14th century. Wat Arun or The Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun stands on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The elaborate usage of colourful tiles in its decoration gives the temple a brilliantly dazzling appearance from a distance. Wat Arun was the earlier site of the Emerald Buddha statue.
