Copenhagen Tourist Attractions

By Abel Smith at 2011-01-13 22:54:36
Copenhagen, the capital of Scandinavia, is one of Europe's smallest capitals and one of the most easily traveled. Copenhagen's center, Slotsholmen, encompasses no more than a thirty minute walk from one side to the other. Slotsholmen is the district with the most historical and architectural appeal of the city. On the opposite side of the Slotsholmen Kanal is Indre By, the most-modern city district, packed tightly together with cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, churches, and museums. Opposite of Indre By is the island of Christianshavn, Copenhagen's art district. Northeast of Indre By is Copenhagen's former aristocratic district, home of several palaces, including the Rosenborg palace, and Kastellet, the oldest continually-utilized military fort in Europe. South of Indre By is Rådhuspladsen and Central Station.

Copenhagen City Hall Square in the center of the city can hold over 50.000 people for events. At one side of the square is the world famous Tivoli Gardens which features an amusement park which was established in 1843. It is worth a stroll around to check out the old world village like atmosphere featuring rides and restaurants. On the other side of the City Hall Square is the pedestrian shopping street Strøget a excellent starting point for shopping expeditions.

Another famous attraction is the Amalienborg Palace which is the residence of the Danish royalty and is actually four different palaces set out surrounding a square. At noon visitors gather to watch the changing of the guard.

Tivoli is a must for any visitor coming to Copenhagen. If you get a ticket it is good all day and you can visit during the day, which gives you a the feeling of being in a beautiful garden, while a visit at night gives you the chance to see another side of Tivoli - the romantic side. There are amusements from rides, to dancing, concerts and restaurants and bars.

At the end of the canal, you will find Kongen Nytorv and the start of the Stroeget. This is a great meeting place and is always crowded with fun-loving Danes. Look for the large anchor that sits there. Right beyond the anchor is where you can catch one of the boat tours which will take you around Copenhagen's waterways. This is a fantastic way to see some of the great sites of the city, relax and get some fresh sea air. The guides are very amusing and well-informed. Make sure you get one of the English-speaking tours.

Another great things about vacationing in Copenhagen is that there are so many things to see and do that are absolutely free or cost very little. If you are a bit adventurous rent a bicycle and go exploring the streets of Copenhagen. With the amount of bike paths available, cycling is a safe and fun way to explore.

Don't forget to sample the local food - you have not been to Denmark until you have had a poelse from a real poelsevogn. That is a hotdog from a hotdog vendor. Make sure you get everything on it. It may sound strange - but you want the roasted onions and the raw onions, the remoulade and even the special pickles - agurker!
